Monk Secondary for primary healing role?
I've never played a monk, usually a ranger or elementalist. I'll be playing with a group and we need a monk, so I'm setting one up. We're playing in Nightfall, PvE only. I've set up a Monk/Dervish, but am not sure that's a good choice. My role will be healing/protection, etc. with little or no attack powers.
Any suggestions? I'm open to deleting the one I've started and beginning a new one if I'm too far off base. I'm at lvl 7, and still soloing, so my skill set is probably not relelvant to this question yet.
Thanks!

The secondary isn't really important since you can change it freely later in the game, Monks use their secondary for energy management, and Monk skills for healing/protecting duties.
I'd say just keep using your Mo/D, no real need to remake him/her.

There's no reason to go pure healer, as 1-3 healing skills should be enough.
Elementalist or Mesmer is the most beneficial for it, as you get strong energy management skills like [[channeling] and [[gole].
A strong hybrid bar looks something like this:
Elite heal
Secondary heal
Third heal / small prot
Small prot
Big prot
Condition removal
Hex removal
Self defense or energy management
Small prots are 5E things such as [[rof] or [[guardian] and big prots are things like [[protective spirit] or [[spirit bond].

Thanks to all for the replies. The consistency among replies says that y'all are pretty much in agreement, so likely excellent advice. I will probably start a new character and go with Mo/E, even though I know I can change it later. I'll be teaming with family and friends long before I get to where I can change secondaries.

I wouldn't use channeling for primary healer with no defence or protection I would go /W for stances. You will want some defence.

Monk/warrior for a stance is a wasted slot in pve. Honestly you shouldn't even be taking damage unless your position is terrible.

No.You wouldn't be taking damage unless you used some protection but the OP wants healing.

Not one or the other, but a hybrid.

that's definitely a waste of a secondary, outside of RA. a monk's secondary should only be used for energy management. unless it's some sort of wierd gimmick or a farming build. if you want some defense i give you [guardian], [protective spirit], [spirit bond], and most of the protection prayers line for that matter. it's called protection prayers for a reason. definitely go with /Me, or /E for a monk. i almost always prefer ele secondary for [glyph of lesser]
also read the sticky at the top of the monk forum. it gives quite a bit of good advice about secondaries, weapons, etc...

I used /W as my secondary from lvl 1 to lvl 20 and had no problem with energy management and I still use /W today for suvival like sprint.I used watchyourself to buff me plus party member at first then I switched to some stances.I had no problems with energy management using mostly 5e spells.

You don't really need energy management or secondary skills in PvE.
My friend gets on just fine without it, and with his own skill in managing energy.

First, defensive stances are useless in pve. Sprint? HM monsters are still faster, thus some prot is still a far better choice (IE guardian). And if you feel like your needing a stance in normal mode, you are obviously doing something wrong.
And lets face it, if you take any damage you ARE badly positioned. Monk are called "backline" for a reason. Also, you should have around 580+ hp as a monk, which should keep you from being targeted.
And on the energy management comment. Hello, we are in pve. theres no shame to saying we sometimes get low on energy. If you seriously think sprint or disciplined stance or any other of those pvp mo/w skills are better than GolE, go aggro 3 groups of jotuns in HM and we will talk about that again.

Go to Great Temple of Balthazar and you can unlock every secondary profession you want for 500gp each. For pve secondary professions are used for e-management, in pvp secondary professions are used for adding a bit more defense. I'd go for Elementalist for [GoLE] ...

I was merely saying on a pure healing monk with no protection stances would be usefull for thier own survival.

Yes but...pure heal monks fail.
I highly doubt that a pure heal monk is smart enough to bring a defensive stance.

outside of an ursan group (ugh), why would you go pure healing? [[Aegis] chaining can mitigate so much more damage than you would ever be able to heal.
